Starting from scratch – Designing and building effective rosters

One of the biggest challenges for many organisations still is building an effective roster. Many businesses are still trying to tailor existing rosters or create pattern rosters that sometimes don’t meet the demands of the work required. Poorly designed rosters can affect the bottom line of organisations as well as put employees at higher risk of fatigue, accidents and injuries. This session will examine how to start right from scratch in building an effective roster.
• What is the best shift work roster?
• How many days / nights should be worked consecutively?
• Linking the roster to productivity goals / work required

CASE STUDY: Dealing with rosters, shifts, crew duty and fatigue management (Case Study)

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) is a critical component of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and New Zealand’s wider security posture. Constant training, exercises, and operations ensures its readiness to respond at a local, national and international level. With extreme shift work expectations combined with the effects of a job that can pose stressful – life and death situations – maintaining the crew well can pose great challenges. This session will outline the RNZAF work in dealing with fatigue management

• How are public holidays treated for rostered workers?
• Leave: How do you deal with annual leave, sick and bereavement leave and long term illness in rostering?

• Letting shiftworkers participate in the decision-making process
• Avoiding misunderstandings when offering new shift schedules
• Understanding that individual shiftworkers have different needs so a ‘one-size-fits-all” approach in communicating won’t work
