Developing and maintaining an effective ISO 14001 certified environmental management system

Many organisations are beginning to implement environmental management systems to meet the requirements of standards such as ISO 14001. Many traditional 'folder on the shelf' ISO 14001 systems are only good for 'getting the tick from auditors'. To engage staff and make real environmental improvements the focus of an environmental management system needs to be on effective collaboration and culture development rather than bureaucracy.

In this session Dr Manuel Seidel will provide an introduction to the ecoWheel framework and how it can be used to implement an effective sustainability strategy on the basis of the ISO 14001 environmental management system standard.

Tonkin & Taylor is one of the few leading environmental and engineering consultancies which is NZ owned. While the numbers of clients seeking to drive sustainability up the professional services supply chain is still relatively small, its employee ownership means sustainability is a key driver for the company. For a firm that designs major engineering works, the environmental influence of its services far outweigh the effects of its office operations. T&T will share how it has:
Identified the key areas where it can make a difference by managing its operations
Developed and adopted tools and techniques for project use
Developed staff understanding and capability
Begun to confront the challenges of operating in countries with very different regulatory regimes and public climates around environmental issues
