In recent years, the concept of sustainability has become more mainstream. This presents a huge growth opportunity, representing a global market of $600B (LOHAS ‘conscious consumers’), and growing at a rate of c. 30% pa. However conversely, there are now a plethora of new entrants and attempts by mainstream players to add eco credentials. The result is a cluttered segment with a lot of “green-wash” brands. Contracting out not necessarily means terminating the employment relationship your business has had with its employees. As with any proposal that significantly affects the security of employment, employees have a right to consult at the “formative stage” of that proposal. All too often the employer is already in breach of the legal obligation to consult meaningfully by the time they even consult a lawyer about what they need to tell the affected employees. Successful people frequently tell stories about those people who have been influential in their career development. They may be fleeting, but more typically they are sustained over time. What they all have in common, is that as a result of the relationship, valuable learning occurred that had an enduring impact. Throughout life we learn from others, so it makes sense for our career and personal development to seek out mentors who believe in us, to act as guides and challenge us to fulfill our potential. A mentor is a person who is experienced and acts as our trusted adviser.

Refit and Retrofit
Robert McClean, Senior Policy Heritage Advisor, NZ Historic Places Trust National Office
Retrofit is change – a process of working with an existing building to maintain or create new spaces or uses. For heritage buildings, it is a process of compatible adaptation – changes to continue use or to achieve new uses (adaptive reuse). This paper explores the concept of retrofit for heritage buildings within the paradigm of living heritage – valued places for people. It makes the case that heritage building retrofit is not just good for the retention of heritage values, but also has the potential to create jobs and make a valuable contribution to the economy. This contribution is supported by research conducted in the USA about the value of heritage building retrofit. View the full paper.
