Martin Coates
Martin is a chartered chemical engineer who started his career in petrochemicals and then moved into the Scottish whiskey distilling industry. After that he held a number of engineering management positions into the UK brewing industry. For the last 5 years he has been employed as a management consultant with Beca in Auckland, providing asset management and change management solutions for a variety of large NZ clients.
During this time he has developed a technique for using his own unique drawing style to communicate complex messages using meaningful illustrations. He calls the process Visualisation and uses the technique to achieve clarity of understanding around key messages, and communicating these messages effectively, in order to get buy-in to change. The approach has been well received across a number of organisations, from industrial clients, government organisations, defence and internally within his own organisation.
He believes that the information explosion that we are exposed to in the modern world demands more efficient communication – and Visualisation is proving to be an effective tool for people to “get the big picture” in a simple, effective and engaging way.
