Developing an IP strategy in an area of rapid technological development

LanzaTech was founded in early 2005 with the stated goal of developing and commercialising proprietary technologies for the production of low-carbon fuels that don’t compromise food or land resources.

LanzaTech’s technology captures carbon from waste gas streams to produce ethanol. The process is beneficial over existing ethanol production technologies as it makes use of low value, high volume, readily available carbon sources without impacting on food production. The Lanzatech process is able to convert carbon monoxide from a variety of sources including industrial waste gases and municipal waste to produce fuels such as ethanol along with other high value chemicals.

Lanzatech has evolved from a company with 4 employees at the end of 2005 to a global company having over 80 staff, and offices in Auckland, Chicago and Shanghai. LanzaTech currently has 2 in-house Patent Attorneys and an IP portfolio of over 110 patent applications, filed across 14 jurisdictions.
