A $2.1 billion upgrade to Queensland’s Gateway Motorway was completed in 2010. The upgrade project included duplication of the Gateway Bridge over the Brisbane River. Bridge construction was by the Gateway Bridge Alliance comprising Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture and VSL, with design by AECOM and subconsultant Cardno. On completion, both bridges were renamed as the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges. This paper provides an overview of the second Gateway Bridge, with particular reference to the requirement for a 300 year design life.

Retrofit is change – a process of working with an existing building to maintain or create new spaces or uses. For heritage buildings, it is a process of compatible adaptation – changes to continue use or to achieve new uses (adaptive reuse). This paper explores the concept of retrofit for heritage buildings within the paradigm of living heritage – valued places for people. It makes the case that heritage building retrofit is not just good for the retention of heritage values, but also has the potential to create jobs and make a valuable contribution to the economy. This contribution is supported by research conducted in the USA about the value of heritage building retrofit.
