Comments from the Chair - Infrastructure Funding and Financing Conference
Dr Sebastian Gehricke, Senior Lecturer, Otago University; Deputy-Director of the Climate and Energy Finance Group

Dr Sebastian Gehrick The infrastructure sector has a great influence on how our future plays out. We are now attempting to vastly replace, alter, fill gaps in and upgrade our infrastructure to support the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change and to solve many other pressing issues outside of climate change, such as our current housing crisis. I believe we can reap vast synergistic benefits by addressing these issues if we act quickly, decisively, but most importantly considering a wholistic picture of outcomes. The investment such a change requires and how it can be structured and supported to meet exactly those goals, is why we are gathering future thinkers, local public and private decision makers and inspirational global change leaders at this conference.

We are currently seeing a major shift of the Finance industry from a short-sighted profit motivated industry to one that considers future generations, the globe and its people as well as long-term value creation. We have seen unprecedented amounts of capital shift away from industries harming the Environment and Society at large and this capital is now trying to find a new home in more beneficial industries, technologies and infrastructure. At this conference we bring together some of the best and most influential minds to make sure New Zealand does its part and reaps the benefits of creating a place for this surge of sustainability orientated capital to grow and positively impact us all.
